Many of the millions of tourists that make their way to Austria each year, need a visa.
Inevitably, one frequently-asked question is how to get a tourist visa to visit Austria.
Although nationals of the Schengen area do not need one, visitors from many other countries might. In addition to that, starting in 2022, the ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System) will be implemented for these nationalities. The ETIAS visa waiver program will simplify the application process and get holders through border control faster while improving security for the Schengen Area.
Read on to discover how to obtain a tourist visa or visa waiver for Austria.
How Can I Get an ETIAS Visa Waiver for Austria?
It will be possible to apply for the ETIAS visa waiver for Austria online once it is launched. It will be the mandatory documentation for citizens of eligible countries visiting the Schengen Area (a group of 26 European countries, including Austria, that have abolished border control between each other, allowing easier movement between these states).
Much like similar electronic travel authorizations (such as the Candian ETA or the American ESTA), the applicant must fill out a form online, providing their personal information and answering security questions. Required application details include:
- Valid passport details, including the date of expiration
- Email address
- Personal details, including full name, date of birth, country of birth, etc.
- Health history
- Travel history
- Any criminal record
Travelers visiting Austria with an ETIAS must have a passport that will be valid for at least 3 months after they plan to leave the country.
In order to apply for an ETIAS, you must be a national of one of the following countries:
- Antigua and Barbuda
- Bosnia and Herzegovina
- Costa Rica
- El Salvador
- Hong Kong
- Marshall Islands

British nationals who are not EU citizens (e.g. citizens of British Overseas Territories) will also have to apply for an ETIAS. When the United Kingdom leaves the EU, its citizens will no longer benefit from the free travel policy of the EU and it is likely that all British citizens will be required to apply for an ETIAS.
Visiting Other Schengen Countries with ETIAS
The ETIAS will also allow the holder to visit any of the other countries in the Schengen Area. If the applicant is planning to visit more than one Schengen country, they must state the first Schengen country they plan to arrive in when they fill in the form.
How Long Does it Take to Get an ETIAS?
The ETIAS online application for Austria is straightforward and quick to complete and submit. It is then processed quickly. It is expected that applicants will receive a response within 48 hours of submitting the online form.
